This week, a new island was formed off the coast of Japan through the eruption of a volcano.  This is the first time this has occurred in 30 years.

Since teachers are constantly searching for ways to incorporate real-world events into the lives of their students (not to mention creative ways to address the new literacy standards), this would be a fantastic writing prompt for science!  Possible topics for student examination could include:

  • The effect on the ocean ecosystem around the eruption
  • How an ecosystem begins  from a barren environment (primary succession)
